Allan
Allan is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Emergency Nursing. He works in the
Emergency Department at a Southern Sydney hospital.
Allan is a champion who saves lives everyday.

Q: How did you get started?

A: I completed a bachelor’s degree in Nursing at the University of Western Sydney Macarthur.

Q: What is your favourite part of the job?

A: My favorite part of the job would have to be playing an active role in resuscitating someone from a near death experience.

Q: What is the biggest challenge you have faced?

A: The biggest challenge I have faced in my career would have to be working at a palliative care hospital for 4 months in the first year of my career. A Palliative Care Hospital cares for people who are terminally ill and in their end stages of life. It was an emotional and very challenging time for me both professionally and personally.

Q: Where do you hope to be in 5 years time?

A: I hope to be a Nurse Practitioner, which gives specialised nurses extended roles of practice such as ordering scans and-ordering medications, which were once only ordered by doctors.

Q: Who are your role models?

A: My father, all the Prophets, Patrick Rafter, Anthony Robbins.

Q: How do you define success?

A: The ability to do your absolute best with what God has given you, academically, physically and spiritually.

Q: What are your ambitions?

A: To do my part in making this world more peaceful, and to also help those who are less fortunate than me.

Q: What is your inspiration?

A: God, and my family.

Q: What is your idea of the perfect day at work?

A: The perfect day at work would be starting at 10:00 am, only having one patient to care for, with all the resources I needed available, then finishing at 3:00 pm.

Q: What advice do you have for guys out there who are starting out?

A: The most important thing for any guys thinking of doing nursing would not to be deterred by their first year of nursing and practical placement. It gets better from then on so stick it out!

Nursing is a great career choice for males and is now getting the recognition it deserves evidenced by a recent wage rise.

It is both a challenging and satisfying job, which is full of variety and options.

It has many advantages over many other careers such as a qualification that is recognized world wide making it easy to work overseas.

It is one of very few professions where you are almost guaranteed a job after you become registered and has many opportunities for promotion and further study.
